"Dancing is for life. It's potent at every stage, and different at every age"
The mission of HeartBeats Dance is to bring dance, movement and mindfulness into people's everyday lives. To this end, Heartbeats Dance has created several community-based programs designed for schools, workplaces, enrichment programs, retreats, organizations and more!
THE ROOTS AND BRANCHES OF HEARTBEATS DANCE
HeartBeats Dance is rooted in a long lineage of Movement Artists, Dance Educators, Community Builders, Change Makers, yoga, mindfulness and Ayurveda Teachers, and other creative hearts and minds committed to creating a world where each one of us is free to be the fullest expression of ourselves in body, mind and spirit.
“Mindfulness not only makes it possible to survey our internal landscape with compassion and curiosity but can also actively steer us in the right direction for self-care.” ―Bessel van der Kolk
The philosophy of HeartBeats Dance is rooted in the belief that the more embodied we are, the more connected we are to our innate creativity; we're also better able to understand and express ourselves, to connect and share with others, and ultimately we feel more alive, healthier and empowered.
”The body says what words cannot"
My name is Eden Flynn. I'm the creator of HeartBeats Dance and I'm so happy you're here! HeartBeats Dance truly comes from my heart. It stems not only from my lifelong journey as a Dancer but also from my love of education, creativity, and holistic health and wellness.
I've studied and performed various dance forms throughout my life, including flamenco, AfroCuban, AfroBrazilian, belly dance, and more. I trained in classical and contemporary dance for the first twenty years of my life and have danced professionally. Most importantly though, dance has been a way of connecting with my body and my inner and outer worlds. It has been a means to express "what words simply cannot". It has also provided me with many amazing opportunities to collaborate with and learn from others from so many walks of life in many parts of the world.
I designed my academic education around the connections between the movement arts (dance and yoga) with history, cultural studies, education and pedagogy, receiving my B.A. and M.A. from UCLA. I have been teaching dance and yoga for many years and completed my Ayurvedic Lifestyle Coaching Certificate from Wise Earth Ayurveda in 2018. I am a member of the National Dance Education Organization and the International Somatic Movement Education & Therapy Association.
There are so many teachers who have helped shape the philosophy and approach of HeartBeats Dance (more than I can name here). But I will say that some of the main influences come from Dance Educators from Luna Dance Institute in Berkeley California, the Dance Education Laboratory in New York City, many Teachers from the field of somatic movement, education and critical pedagogy, and many yoga and mindfulness Teachers. I am also deeply inspired by and grateful for the feminine wisdom and Ayurvedic healing practices as passed down by Maya Tiwari and other women Healers.
